Shopify to Webflow

Migrate from Shopify to Webflow

This is almost never a full move, and it should not be. Shopify's checkout is the part you are actually paying for, and it cannot run anywhere else. What can move is everything in front of it: the homepage, the story, the editorial, the landing pages.

A migration like this usually takes 3–4 weeks

What the migration covers

What moves, and what needs a decision.

Carried across

  • Homepage, brand and editorial pages rebuilt in Webflow
  • Blog articles into CMS collections, with their existing URLs
  • Product content presented in Webflow, with the cart and checkout still Shopify's
  • Redirect map from the old Shopify paths, written before launch rather than after

Flagged upfront

  • Checkout stays on Shopify. Every documented integration path ends by handing the buyer back to Shopify's own checkout, so the split is where the cart begins
  • Shopify's product and collection URLs are fixed, and Shopify blocks redirects on those paths, so /products and /collections cannot simply be pointed elsewhere
  • The Ajax cart endpoints only work from a Shopify-hosted theme, so a Webflow page adds to cart a different way
  • Shopify is retiring the script tags that inject third-party code into storefronts, so tracking that spans the Webflow pages and the Shopify cart is rehomed before it stops firing

The version of this that works keeps Shopify doing what Shopify is good at. The buyer browses on Webflow, and the moment they add to cart they are on Shopify’s side of the line, checking out on your own domain because Shopify has served checkout from the merchant’s domain since 2017.

Two constraints shape the whole build. Shopify’s product and collection URLs are fixed at /products/ and /collections/, and Shopify will not let you redirect those paths away, so the split has to be designed around them rather than over them. And the Ajax cart endpoints most Shopify themes use are only available to themes Shopify hosts, so a Webflow page reaches the cart another way. Neither is a blocker. Both are a surprise if nobody says them out loud in week one.

It is worth correcting one thing while we are here, because it changes what is possible: the old advice that checkout cannot be touched unless you are on Plus is out of date. Branding the checkout, and adding apps to the thank-you and order-status pages, are available well below Plus now. What Plus still buys is customisation of the checkout steps themselves.

The last thing I would raise before starting is tracking. Shopify is retiring the script tags that inject third-party code into storefronts, and a good deal of analytics still arrives that way. That work is coming whether or not you move, so it may as well be scoped alongside.
